9 Signs a Tree Needs to Come Down

1. Large Dead Limbs in the Canopy

3. Root Heave: Soil Lifting Around the Base

If the ground on one side of the tree is bulging, cracking, or lifting — especially opposite a lean — the root plate itself is rotating out of the soil. This is the most urgent sign on this list. A tree with a moving root plate can fail with no further warning.

  • What to look for: a fresh crack in the soil or lawn in an arc around the base, a raised mound of turf on one side, exposed roots that weren't visible before, or a gap opening between the trunk flare and the soil.

6. Canopy Dieback That Keeps Spreading

Dieback is the canopy thinning and dying from the top and edges inward — the tree retreating because the roots or vascular system can no longer support the whole crown. One bad summer causes temporary thinning; dieback that advances year over year is a tree losing the fight.

  • What to look for: D-shaped or round exit holes in the bark, fine sawdust-like frass in bark crevices or at the base, sap or dark staining weeping from holes, and bark flaking off to reveal winding larval galleries underneath.

After a windstorm, look up. A limb that tore partway, a co-dominant stem that split at the union, or a vertical crack running down the trunk is structural damage the tree cannot knit back together. Cracked wood only gets worse, and the next storm finds the same weak point.

  • What to look for: fresh vertical cracks in the trunk, a seam of torn wood where two main stems meet, limbs hanging or resting in the canopy (hangers), and included bark unionstight V-shaped crotches — that have started to open.

9. The Wrong Tree Over the Wrong Target

How do I know if my tree is dead or just dormant?

Timing and the scratch test. Sacramento's deciduous trees — valley oak, Modesto ash, Chinese pistache — go bare from roughly November to March, so a leafless tree in January proves nothing. Scratch a small patch of bark on a few twigs: green and moist underneath means alive, brown and dry means that twig is dead.
