- Repeated, escalating damage — a sweetgum that has lifted the same sidewalk panels twice in seven years despite root pruning and a barrier is telling you that the root system has outgrown what management can contain. Each root-pruning cycle carries fresh structural stability risk; at some point the cumulative risk to the tree's stability exceeds the benefit of keeping it.
- Poor tree health alongside root problems — a sweetgum showing canopy dieback, trunk decay, or prior heavy pruning that weakened its structure is a bad candidate for aggressive root management. A tree that is already structurally compromised above ground cannot afford to lose anchoring roots below.
