The haustoria remain fully intact and alive in the wood. Within one growing season, new shoots emerge from those haustoria. Within two years, the clump has typically regrown to a visible size. Repeat this process a few times and you have spent labor and tree stress on what is effectively cosmetic maintenance with no lasting benefit.
